About Us

Our work begins with the land. More specifically, it is the soil that determines the biological potential of any given site. During the past thirty years, we have always looked to the soil and surrounding indicator species to guide and inform our designs.

Since the 1970's, we have been practicing with the design and establishment of ecologically based planting design. We understand the science, the aesthetics, and the maintenance of landscape systems. We are also aware of the disconnect between people and the natural environment. ...read more

For example, very few people know the names of even our most common native plants. This disconnect has become our mission. We are experts at packaging, organizing, and editing native plantings so they are desirable, attractive and maintainable. Using simple techniques and basic principles of landscape design, we are able to deliver designs that are perceived as neat and cared for while technically maintaining a high level of ecological integrity.

Sustainability is the current buzz word. We see it as an important, but elusive goal -- especially in a landscape with a high level of use. The key to sustainability in the landscape is to allow for regeneration which has simple, but profoundly different requirements for maintenance than traditional landscaping. Sustainability invites human participation (not control) in the restoration process, which requires maintenance personnel that understand natural systems and how to work with them.

Communication is key. We work with our clients to clearly identify their expectations for the landscape: how will it look, function, and be maintained (prior to beginning design work). We understand planting design and the variety of expressions that people select for their environs. From formal European gardens to restored woodlands and prairies, we have helped people create landscapes appropriate to their site and style. In the long run, our most successful projects result from a good match between the ecological aspects of the land and the style and maintenance expectations of the client.
